Liposuction

Everyone has heard the term liposuction and most people associate it with the removal of unwanted fat from the belly, thighs, and buttocks.  Whereas these are quite common areas to have liposuction, it can also be utilized in the face. One of the many changes that occur in the aging face is the deposition of fatty tissue in the neck, cheeks, and jowls.  This is different than fat found in the buccal space (deep part of the cheek) which is addressed with a different treatment (buccal fat removal).

The use of liposuction can help to contour the face and neck by selectively removing these fatty deposits.  The most commonly treated areas include the neck, area under the chin, cheeks, and jowls.  This can be performed in isolation in younger patients, meaning no other surgery is required.  Starting around age 35-40, the skin loses sufficient elasticity that liposuction cannot be performed in isolation.  It requires some form of skin tightening usually from surgery so as not to leave a turkey waddle of skin behind.  In either situation, a compression dressing is usually kept in place in the immediate post operative period to assist the skin in contracting back up to a more youthful and less full location.

What's nice about liposuction is it can often be performed in the clinic with the use of local anesthetic.  This can offer quite a bit of savings over having to go to the operating room, and can provide more immediate results compared to other fat reduction treatments such as Kybella, Cool Sculpting, or Sculpsure.
