IPL

IPL or an intense pulsed light is an excellent way to treat pigment issues and red discolorations on the face and neck.

When it comes to brown spots on the face, these represent collections of pigment.  When an IPL is used, the pigment absorbs the light causing the pigment to be broken down.  Initially the brown spots will darken as they have absorbed the light, but over several days they will begin to slough off.  The result is a nice improvement in the discoloration and brown spots around the face.  The nice thing is there is essentially no down time with your skin having a slight glow for a day or so, almost like you've been out in the sun.

IPL is also great for the color red.  This means it can help treat certain findings of rosacea and capillaries around the nose and face.  Similar to how it treats brown spots, the blood will absorb the light from the IPL.  This will cause the individual blood vessel to break and seal itself.  Depending on your goals, more energy can be used which leads to slight bruising, but often only takes one treatment.  Conversely, less energy can be used that doesn't bruise but if often takes 3 treatments spaced every 2-4 weeks to get a result.

IPL is often called a photo facial.  Although not as effective as other resurfacing techniques such as lasers, chemical peels, and dermabrasion, it can help to improve the texture and quality of the skin.  It usually takes 3 treatments spaced every 4 weeks to really get an improvement with this, but it also has essentially no down time.
