What is a Brow Lift?

Brow lift surgery, also commonly known as a forehead lift, reduces the signs of aging that affect the area above the eyebrows, including the forehead, where expression lines and sagging skin tend to occur. A drooping brow can also affect the upper eyelid skin. Many patients who suspect they need an “eyelid lift” may actually be in need or should consider a brow lift instead. The most important thing you can do is mention your concerns during your consultation with Dr. Guy.

What Causes a Drooping Brow Line?

With age, the brow begins to drop, and the outside corner turns downward. With excess ptosis (drooping), the brow can push down on the upper eyelid and even begin to obstruct your vision. It is important to distinguish between the brow and the upper eyelid as the cause for a “tired” eye, as the treatment, although complimentary, differs.

What are my Brow Lift Options?

Dr. Guy uses several approaches for brow lifts that will depend on your unique situation.

This method involves making an incision directly above the eyebrow. The direct approach is very rarely chosen, as it leaves a noticeable scar. However, for patients with facial paralysis and one eyebrow drooping, it can be a great option. This is the most effective method to raise the brow predictably, but the resulting scar is not usually acceptable.

This involves making two separate incisions in wrinkles present in the forehead.  This is only an option for patients with very deep forehead wrinkles that would hide the incisions. Similarly to the direct approach, it can reliably raise the brow, but the scar is not usually acceptable unless you already have deeper forehead wrinkles.  For those with deep forehead wrinkles and thinning hair, it can be an excellent option.

One positive aspect of this incision is that it can lower a high hairline while also raising the brows. It does lead to temporary and, in some cases, permanent numbness of the top of the head, but can do an excellent job raising the brow and lowering the high hairline.

This is similar to the pretrichial approach, except the incision is about an inch farther back within the hair. The coronal method conceals the incision, but it does raise the hairline, which may not always be a good option. It also has the same risk of numbness as the pretrichial approach.

This is useful when only the outer corners of the brows have fallen.  This incision is placed within the hairline, but it is much smaller than the coronal or pretrichial incisions.

This involves using several smaller incisions within the hairline and using endoscopic cameras to raise the brows. The endoscopic approach hides all incisions within the hairline and reduces the risk of numbness. It can be an excellent option for most patients.

Dr. Guy is highly qualified to perform each of these procedures and will help you determine what option best suits you in consultation.

As with any surgery, there are risks to consider. The most common risks include bleeding, infection, numbness, pain, and other similar concerns. However, Dr. Guy is highly trained and will take all the necessary precautions to make sure you are as safe as possible.

The cost of your brow lift will depend on many factors, including the extent of the operation, the surgical approach chosen, anesthesia fees, and more, so it’s hard to provide an exact estimate until you come in for a consultation. That said, we are committed to finding the most cost-effective option to address your concerns.

As previously mentioned, there are several different types of brow lift procedures offered by Dr. Guy, and each can be a bit different when it comes to what that particular procedure entails, the degree of aging, and your anatomy.

With that said, your brow lift will involve several small incisions above the hairline, depending on the amount and type of lifting you will need. The brow will then be smoothed, lifted, and affixed into a raised position.
